Is my family required to live in Adams 27J School District in order to join the waitlist?
You are not required to live in Adams 27J to add to our waitlist. However, in-district families will receive first priority in our lottery. If you reside outside of Adams 27J School District at the time we extend an offer, but indicated you lived in-district, we will be required to rescind any offers of enrollment. Once the offer has been rescinded, you may be placed back on the waitlist using your current address in the SchoolMint platform.
How does the Discovery Magnet lottery work?
Discovery Magnet uses a tiered lottery system:
1. Students who qualify for a fee waiver
2. Students of Discovery Magnet School staff
3. Siblings of a current Discovery Magnet student
4. Students who reside in set district planning zone
5. Students of 27J staff
6. All other District resident students
7. All other non-District resident students
What are my 'odds' of receiving an offer?
The process of extending offers is in a constant state of motion. We are unable to answer inquiries about a student's 'odds' of receiving an offer - there are simply too many factors at play (number of openings, number of students on the waitlist, the accept/decline rate of offers being extended to families who are in front of you, current families deciding they are unable to return which creates vacancies, families who accepted an offer previously but then decided they will not attend, etc). We do continue to make offers even after school has started as vacancies open up. Once the lottery has taken place, we encourage you to check the parent dashboard in your SchoolMint Enroll account. Once the lottery takes place in March, how long will it take for me to hear if my student will be offered a spot at Discovery Magnet?
The registrar's office will begin sending email and/or text offers (using the email address or phone number provided to us in your SchoolMint Enroll account), on February 17th. Keep in mind, each family is given 72 hours to make their decision and this process takes time. We continue to make offers late into the summer as spots become available. Log in to your SchoolMint Account to check your offer status at any time. Upon receipt of an offer of enrollment, parents have 72 hours to accept or decline that offer. Upon accepting an offer of enrollment, parents will have 7 calendar days to turn in all completed enrollment paperwork. If your family was offered a spot at any time and you did not respond or declined the offer, your student was removed from the waitlist.
Why can’t I see my waitlist number?
We do not release waitlist numbers. Once your student is offered a seat, you will be notified via text/email.
If I do not respond to an offer, what happens to my waitlist entry?
If your student was offered a spot at any time, and you did not respond or declined the offer, your student was removed from the waitlist.
If I haven't received an email for an offer yet, does that mean I won't get in?
Not necessarily. We are often still sending enrollment offers in the late summer. It takes several months to send out all of the enrollment offers. If you do receive an invitation to enroll, you will have 72 hours to get back to us. Not everyone accepts the offer of a spot at Discovery Magnet, but we must wait 72 hours for the response, or until that invitation expires, before we can move down the waitlist. If I don't get in this year, how will that affect my chances for future years?
Students must join the waitlist each year they wish to be included in the lottery. Students who applied in a prior year will be removed from the waitlist for future lotteries
What is Problem Based learning?
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to authentic, engaging, and complex questions, problem, or challenge and make their work public for feedback to grow and learn from.
The transition to this learning will be taught in smaller sections for students to learn each component. Teachers and staff will work with students to engage in the work as their skills become stronger. PBL is our focus but it is not an all day, every day approach. Students will experience one to two full PBL cycles a year. During other classes and times the students are engaging in mini cycles to learn the skills necessary to continue to improve in a full cycle.
How will students transition into High School after this type of learning?
Transition to high school - one of the main reasons we are using this method is to prepare our students for experiences beyond our building. This type of method allows for students to engage in the iterative process of learning. It allows for students to learn to respond to feedback.
Is there a dress code or uniform?
There are no uniforms. Dress code will follow 27J’s policy.
